Even within a defined terroir like the Niagara on the Lake growing region, subtle differences in topography, climate, elevation, and harvest date mean the grapes of each individual vineyard will show varying characteristics.

The moment you lay eyes on Colaneri Estate Winery you realize in an instant that it is a truly special place. Located in the heart of the St. David’s Bench sub-appellation, the almost impossibly grand building is sprawled out in the lush Colaneri family vineyards. Built in the Romanesque style, the winery is an exceptionally unique point of interest in Niagara-on-the-Lake, as there are no other wineries, nay, buildings, made in this style in the region.
Most residents of Niagara-on-the-Lake would agree that the best place to be on the first frosty night of winter is a warm bed. Those at Inniskillin Wines would argue that the best place to be when the frost hits is in the vineyard. Something miraculous happens in Niagara-on-the-Lake when the temperature dips to -8° Celsius; grapes left on the vine long after normal harvest begin to freeze. As the water inside the berries turns to ice, the natural sugars and other dissolved solids do not. It is at this optimal temperature and usually in the middle of the night, that the Icewine harvest begins.

Pioneering winemaker and environmental engineer Dr. Joseph E. In 1983, Joseph produced one of the first Icewines ever to come from Niagara.
Niagara-on-the-Lake is a key destination not only for those who enjoy wine, but also for growers, producers and winemakers from around the world. There is a terrific amount of viticultural knowledge in the region and the terroir is a global destination for those with a passion for winemaking and a desire to contribute to its growth and development. With so much expertise in one region, it is only natural that Canada’s only commercial teaching winery should be located in Niagara-on-the-Lake. The enjoyment of wine is an encompassing sensory experience. Not only is wine to be tasted, but it should be observed with the eyes, the nose, the feel in the mouth, and by the intrigue created as the wine plays against other flavours on the palate.
At Reif Estate Winery, the philosophy of rich sensory experiences extends well beyond the wine and is evident in every aspect of the facility.
The Hunse family, owners and operators of Stonechurch Vineyards, have been farming their land since 1955. Early vegetable crops eventually gave way to vast tracts of tender fruit orchards and vineyards and in 1989 Stonechurch Vineyards emerged from Hunse Farms as a small cottage winery. As with so many of the smaller wineries in Niagara-on-the-Lake, there was enough demand for the high quality wine that the focus shifted incrementally, orchards were sacrificed, winery operations expanded...
